    Black Digerati: Sonya Donaldson

Meet Sonya Donaldson, a multi-talented Black Digerati fulfilling roles in the fields of technology, journalism, and higher education. Donaldson has been a journalist for nearly two decades---and she also has more than a decade of experience in the technology field. She works as a technology consultant for entrepreneurs and small businesses, and holds editorial duties with Black Enterprise magazine in addition to teaching courses at the University of Virginia, where she is a doctoral candidate in English Literature.

A writing course taught by Donaldson, "Technology and Identities," explores the effects of technology on society---a subject she examines quite often in her blog, where she discusses her views on the connection between technology and popular culture, politics, entertainment, and education---with an emphasis on integration of these concepts. Donaldson's personal blog, Tech & Sensibility, addresses the human response to technology and offers readers something not all that visible on the web or in the media---a black women's perspective on crucial topics like privacy and security, and the ever shifting faces of social networking and social media.

In a blog post titled, "Privacy and Security: Comforting Myths or Rockwellian Nightmare?" Donaldson questions societities perception of "ters such as 'secure' and 'private'," while raising the question of if privacy and security both in the digital and physical world are just "comforting myths."

"Given that we volunteer so much of ourselves through images, conversation threads, status updates, wall posts, YouTube videos, Blip.fm playlists, blog posts, and a host of other means, are we really private citizens?" she writes. "What do we mean by 'safe' and what are the challenges for security experts...What are the challenges in keeping ourselves 'safe?' Is this even possible?"
